Overview

Located in the heart of Cape Town’s City Centre, Ethiopian Madam Taitou offers a genuine taste of Ethiopian cuisine that feels authentic and inviting. Nestled on Long Street, this cozy spot is perfect for those curious to explore rich, layered flavors within a warm, culturally rooted atmosphere.

The restaurant’s highlight is undoubtedly its shared platters, designed to bring people together around a communal dining experience. The Meat Platter and Veggies, alongside the Vegetarian Platter, showcase a vibrant balance of tender beef tibs, shredded chicken, and a variety of vegetables, all served with traditional injera bread—the soft, spongy flatbread that’s essential to Ethiopian dining. This method of eating with your hands adds an interactive dimension, making the meal memorable beyond just taste.

Flavors here are bold and nuanced, often layered with distinctive spices that evoke the essence of Ethiopia’s culinary landscape. From the spicy and smoky beef tibs to the aromatic house-all spice tea and the rich Ethiopian coffee, each dish holds a story. The menu also features unique offerings like the Sweet Potato Dessert and locally-inspired house wine, rounding out the experience.

Though the space is intimate and simple, it retains a delightful charm enhanced by historical decor that immerses diners in Ethiopian culture. Guests have praised the attentive and patient staff, who not only provide excellent service but also take the time to guide newcomers through the traditional ways of enjoying the food.

For groups, the four-person platter stands out as a well-curated mix of spicy and mild options, meat and vegetarian alike, making it an appealing choice for varied palates, including first-timers and picky eaters. Whether you arrive as part of a culinary tour or on your own culinary adventure, Ethiopian Madam Taitou offers a genuine and highly recommended experience that is both filling and flavorful.

In essence, Ethiopian Madam Taitou speaks to food lovers who appreciate shared, hands-on dining with authentic, thoughtfully prepared dishes—ideal for those seeking a taste of Ethiopian culture in the vibrant urban setting of Cape Town.

We went here with Cape Town Culinary Tours and had a great experience with Ethiopian food. Lots of interesting and sometimes spicy flavor profiles in an eat with your hands shared platter that included flatbread for scooping up savory lentils, split peas, beef, spinach, chicken, beets, salad, etc. The restaurant is decorated with lots of history and the staff is attentive. It’s not fancy but it is delicious.

Had the 4 person platter, mix of spicy/non-spicy and meat/veg. Enjoyed by all including by a very picky teenager trying Ethiopian for the first time. Highly recommended!

The restaurant is small and they were full when we arrived without a reservation, but they let us sit at the space in front, which was a tiny calming oasis on the side of the busy street. I would have been content to eat there but they brought us inside when space opened up. Three of us shared a platter with meats and veggies, and we ate until we were all stuffed full. The array of spices and flavors was incredible!

Excellent restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere/design. Very friendly, supportive, and patient staff. We really enjoyed the setup and the (quality of the) food. Options are a bit limited, but for the price and flavor it is unbeatable. 5 out of 5, highly recommended!

This is such a quaint and unique restaurant and it should be a must visit if you are in Cape Town. We managed to get a last minute booking and was seated in a private area in a loft that we had to climb a small ladder. I love this setup! Ordering was a little stressful if you have never been to an Ethiopian restaurant before. We ordered the veggie sampler and the lamb mista (which is a combination of lamb alicha and lamb key wat). It was all served in a lovely platter along with injera bread. Oh the food was absolutely delicious. The veggie sampler is a MUST and then you can add on the meats that you would like. We could not finish the meal despite desperately wanting to. The ambience of the place was also so lovely. We felt like we were in the middle of a little village. The only downside was the initial server we had. She was rather trying to hurry us along to order despite having handed us the menu just short of 1-2 mins prior. But then our other server came and all was good.

I loved the decor inside. It’s quite chic and unique. The food was good, but I have had better Ethiopian. I would come back to the place to just eat there though. It really is such a vibe.
